We leave the volcanoes, for Takachiho and its great remains left by the lava flows. Eroded over time by the "Gokase river", the pyroclastic flows have turned into deep narrow gorges where lush vegetation grows. We have there a bit god time and fun. In the evening, lets treat ourselves to the luxury of a stopover at Miyazaki's Riviera which displays its palm trees with respect.
Once again, we will switch between mountain and sea. We head for Kagoshima, the largest southernmost city of Kyushu. For its sunshine and its proximity to the Sakurajima volcano which lets fumes escape along the day, this city is often called, the “Eastern Naples”. This ancient feudal city is also imprint by the last samurai Takamori Saigo in the history of Japan. We can't miss the district in which he lived, only 150 years ago.
To begin our return to the north, we will drive through the Satsuma area, place where traditional ceramics have been produced for over 400 years. This ceramic, usually, is made with eggshells colors and dark patterns. Place where will have lunch, marks the border between the main island and several islands and peninsulas that we will cross over the next 3 days. Symbolically Shimoshima Island is home of Japanese Christians
At sun rise, we discover some of the captivating places where sulphurous waters and huge steam escape from the bowels of the earth. Amazing views, do not miss it. We are leaving "the hell of Unzen" for Nagasaki. Like Hiroshima, this city represents a tremendous hope and fight for peace in the world. Western spirit, touching, magical, dazzling, so many qualifiers that encourage travelers to extend their stopover in this charming city.
We continue on a few coastal roads before marking, in the morning, a break in the japanese capital of luxury ceramics. According to the annual and local events programming, the International Saga balloon festival should bring us much fun for the rest of our day. Close to Fukuoka, we spend our stop in the last ryokan.
